A traditional Muslim iftar dinner is being held Friday night at the Christian Campus House to bring together people of both faiths in a cultural experience.

“We are working on breaking down barriers that we sometimes build between Christian and Muslim communities,” Bonnie Atkins, associate campus pastor, said.

All community members are invited, and a free dinner is provided by the Islamic Center of Muncie. Attendees are encouraged to bring a side dish, containing no pork, or a non-alcoholic beverage.

During the holy Islamic month of Ramadan, Muslims attempt to get closer to God by fasting from dawn until sunset, said professor Muhammad Maqbool, the Muslim Students Association adviser. The iftar is a meal that is held at sunset to break this fast and is a chance to celebrate with family and community members.

A buffet-style table will be set up with traditional iftar foods such as dates, naan bread, halal meats, lintels and rice. There will also be dishes such as pasta, fish and kebabs.

The dinner will be held in the auditorium of the CCH, and a prayer room for Muslims attendees will be set up for after the meal.

Before the dinner, there will be a presentation given by the Saudi Students Club about the flooding in Pakistan. The Islamic Center will be collecting donations for the relief fund.

The flood has affected as many as 25 million Pakistanis. Food, water and shelter are hard to come by for 10 million misplaced citizens. They are suffering too much, Maqbool said.

The Muslim Student Association will be giving a presentation about the history of Ramadan and sharing pictures and videos to explain the tradition in detail.

The CCH held an iftar dinner two years ago, but it was moved to a room in the Rinker Center last year. They were contacted again this year due to the limited space as interest in the event grows.

“It was quite an interesting experience and a learning experience for all of us,” Atkins said. “I’m glad we can do it again.”

During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food and drink during the day to experience the daily lives of the poor. It makes them realize the importance of giving to the poor and helping humanity, which is also expressed in other religions as well.

“We are not only here to talk about [Islam]. We are here to help humanity in the community,” Maqbool said.

What: Iftar Dinner

Where: Christian Campus House, 1411 W. Riverside Ave.

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday

Cost: Free

Note: Donations for Pakistan and food items accepted

For students that can’t attend the dinner but want to help, Maqbool asked for them to bring donations to his office, Cooper Science 101-L, or to The Islamic Center of Muncie. Checks should be made to the Islamic Center of Muncie. Memo: Pakistan Affectees.

New Orleans artist Mark Bercier saw something strange one day. While driving to a family member’s home, Bercier turned a corner and saw a wooden telephone pole with a picture of a watermelon on it. The strange thing about the image was that the sign said “fresh peaches.” The juxtaposition of the two intrigued Bercier, and he has created a living off art based on that occurrence.

Bercier couldn’t stop thinking about that sign, and 25 years later he has what he calls “The Healin’ Symbols.” These are 26 different images and words paired together that do not necessarily go together, but have significant meaning in his life. One of the primary images, that of “Baby,” was taken from a self-portrait his daughter drew, and some of his work derives from that piece. The picture of a bone is matched with the word “jazz.” The words “fresh peaches” are matched with the picture of a house.

This visual language he’s created helps define much of his art, something he’s been involved in for a long time.

Bercier was born in 1950 in Crowley, La., a small town in the southern part of the state. When he was young, Bercier didn’t play sports or do many extracurricular activities, so he started taking art lessons with an older woman in the community.

“It’s kind of been my life and passion. Not kind of, actually, it is,” Bercier said.

Bercier moved to New Orleans 25 years ago, which he describes as an influential move. His artwork changed drastically, and Bercier now works with all kinds of art: sculpture, painting, drawing and prints. He has his own studio in downtown New Orleans called Café Baby. Before the move, Bercier described his work as being tragic, dark and serious, but once he hit the “Big Easy,” his art took on an opposite attitude.

The art Bercier creates now is something Sherry Powell, co-owner of Jack’s Camera Shop in downtown Muncie and a board member at Gallery 308, enjoys very much. She said there is really only one way for her to describe it.

“It makes me smile,” Powell said. “The colors are so wonderful and his work has such a sense of fun to it.”

Fun has come with the territory. Bercier considered it a truly great treasure to get to live in New Orleans and experience the life and culture there.

“It’s so inspirational and so important to my artistic well being,” he said.

Powell said she could see the influence in his art, although she said she may be biased because she is attached (attracted?) to the French Quarter. She said she thinks New Orleans is unlike anywhere else in the U.S.

“I just feel like New Orleans does nourish the artist,” she said.

Ball State students and Muncie residents will have the chance to see some of Bercier’s recent work from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Gallery 308 downtown. Eight to nine of Bercier’s paintings will be shown along with 25 to 26 monoprints, which are one-of-a-kind prints.

Bercier’s artwork finding its way to Muncie is no coincidence. Powell and her husband, Mike Powell, the other owner of Jack’s Camera Shop, have known Bercier for more than 10 years. They met in the French Quarter in New Orleans and have been friends ever since.

“They asked me to do this show and I was very pleased to do it,” Bercier said.

Although Gallery 308 focuses on local art as much as possible, Powell said that sometimes Muncie needs something different.

“Sometimes it’s nice to bring in someone Muncie wouldn’t have access to otherwise,” she said.

Powell encourages everyone to take advantage of the opportunity to view Bercier’s artwork, especially since this is his first visit to the Midwest.

Bercier’s journey will not end in Muncie. He has more traveling planned for the future. Bercier has developed a career in painting portraits of children and will be showcasing that work in April in Atlanta at the Marcia Wood Gallery.
