This week’s film releases: April 30
“Please Give” (Sony Pictures Classics): Catherine Keener and Oliver Platt star as a married couple that run into much more than stress when they plan to expand their apartment while simultaneously beginning a relationship with their next door neighbor, played by Ann Morgan Guilber. The movie focuses on the complications of class in America. It is rated R for language, sexual content and nudity.
“A Nightmare on Elm Street” (Warner Bros.): Samuel Bayer breathes new life into the 1984 Wes Craven classic. Academy Award nominee Jackie Earle Haley brings serial killer Freddy Krueger into 2010 with this louder, more modern version of one of the most famous horror films ever made. If the trailers for this film do it any justice, the new Freddy may be more horrifying than the original. “A Nightmare on Elm Street” is rated R for bloody violence, disturbing images, terror and language. Perfect.
“Furry Vengeance” (Summit Entertainment): Brendan Fraser stars as a real estate developer whose new subdivision is protested by CGI-created woodland creatures. The animal voices are provided by Ricky Garcia, Brooke Shields, Ken Jeong and Angela Kinsey. The film is rated PG for some rude humor, mild language and brief smoking.
Recommended: “A Nightmare on Elm Street”
Another easy choice this weekend: The decision to cast Haley as the villainous Krueger, who kills young people in their dreams, is one of the most interesting choices in a long time. Haley is bound to give this horror remake some major adrenaline.
