This week’s CD releases: February 2
Pepi Ginsberg, “East is East”
Brooklyn artist Pepi Ginsberg mixes operatic falsetto vocals with a folksy whimper. Ginsberg sometimes sounds like she’s tired when she’s singing, but her music isn’t anything to yawn at. For an artist who wrote an album based on the hypothetical love child of Bob Dylan and Deerhoof Ginsberg, she is oddly enjoyable.
The Album Leaf, “A Chorus of Storytellers”
The Album Leaf is the musical endeavor of Jimmy LaValle, an instrumentalist, producer and mixer out of San Diego. The new record, “A Chorus of Storytellers,” incorporates a mellow vibe with layers of subtle instrumentation and vocal harmonies. In the track “Falling From The Sun,” the lyrics “If the sky is burning / When the clouds move in / We come so close / When we just miss / We can see the stars / We can hide the end,” are gently sung over muted, droning keyboards and light guitar notes. The instrumentation meshes so well with the lyrical melody that it’s hard to pull apart the different instruments following the vocal line. The song swiftly builds to give the listeners the feeling of gently falling from the sun.
Other notable releases:
The Soft Pack, “The Soft Pack”
Lil Wayne, “Rebirth”
Yo-Yo Ma, “Mendelssohn: Piano Trios, op. 49 and op. 46”
